FAQ
How much do I need to know about Stargate to play?
At least some prior knowledge of the series is preferable, though not strictly required. We've included all the information we think is relevant to game-play here, but we're more than happy to give you a bit of extra help if you're willing to do your part.

How much information should I include in the app?
We've chosen to go with a character description rather than a sample post because we'd like to see that you've thought about your character choice, rather than just applied willy-nilly. The app should show us your understanding of the character, and perhaps how you see them fitting into Atlantis. A couple of decent paragraphs will be sufficient.

Do I have to have a PB?
No. If you're playing an animated or illustrated character, you're most welcome to use screen captures/scans from your canon. But you do need at least one icon.

What if I need one of the canon senior staff members, such as Weir, in my thread? Can I NPC them?
As these are appable characters, we'd obviously prefer to avoid, or at least minimize NPC usage of main canons where possible. However, if the need arises, you are allowed to bring unclaimed canons in as NPCs.

Can my character have the ATA gene?
The ATA (Ancient Technology Activation) gene is a particular gene which is needed to operate certain pieces of Ancient technology, particularly the more powerful ones. A very small percentage of Earth-born humans do possess the gene naturally, while a gene therapy has been formulated to give non-carriers the gene, with about a 48% success rate. Therefore:
- If your character is from a Stargate canon, obviously, you'll stick with the canon.
- If your character is a human from Earth, they may possess the gene either naturally or through gene therapy.
- If your character is a human (or closely-related humanoid) from another planet, world or AU Earth, they may gain the gene through gene therapy.
- If your character is non-human with a substantially different biology to that of humans, they may not possess the gene at all.

Who decides whether my character has the ATA gene?
It's up to you. As long as you follow the guidelines above, you're fine.

What do the field units do? Who can be a member of a field unit?
Pretty much what you see on the show. Field teams, usually of approximately four members, are sent out to explore other planets in the Pegasus Galaxy, perform reconnaissance, establish contact with other civilizations, carry out military operations, seek out alien technology and perform scientific studies. Any expedition member can join a field unit, unless there's a specific reason to exclude them (for instance, a medical condition, allegiances being under question, chronic stupidity).

Can I take up a character from anywhere during or after canon time-line, or does it have to be from the last point of canonicity?
You may take up a character from any point in a time-line, so long as you can explain why they come from this period, especially if we have other characters from the series already in-game.

If I already play a character here - do I really need to fill out an app for a second character I want to pick up?
Yes. I need to know first about the character, as I'm not familiar with every fandom out there; and secondly but more importantly - how you see this character. Apps need to be done for every character you pick up.

Are we required to keep journals for our characters?
No. Characters personal logs are completely optional and there for those that wish to use connected journals as a way to get to know other characters or as a plot device. If you do choose to use the connected journals, your character can lock the entry - please just make a note of that at the top of the entry so other players know if their character can see the personal log or not.

How long do we have to wait for a someone participating in a thread to post before we move on without them?
About three days, as a rule of thumb. If you disappear for more than three days while still actively involved in a thread, the mods may be taking the liberty of NPCing your character. This is not as punishment, it's just for the health of the game. Also, this means that when something like this happens, other players in the thread need to let the mods know. If you're activly involved in a thread and know you'll be disappearing, it's your responsibility to make sure your character is taken care of somehow - Pulling them out realistically or letting someone else NPC them.
