About Lost City Found About Stargate and Atlantis:
While this game does take advantage of a Stargate setting, we hope to make this game accessible to everybody - Stargate fans and non-fans alike. So if you're not familiar with the sci-fi, here's what you need to know:
The Ancients are a powerful, technologically advanced humanoid race whose existence predates the humans of Earth. They were once the dominant species in the Milky Way Galaxy, and though they disappeared millennia ago their legacy can be found in numerous outposts both on Earth and other planets, and most notably in a network of Stargates across the galaxy. Stargates are large ring-shaped devices, typically paired with a dialing device which can be used to enter the coordinates of 'Gates on other planets to establish wormholes and allow instantaneous transportation between worlds.
Earth's Stargate was discovered in the mid-20th Century and it fell into the possession of the United States military, though its uses were not recognized until the mid-1990s. Once the Stargate had been successfully activated, the US Air Force established the highly classified Stargate Program, dedicated to the exploration and study of alien planets. The program's primary goal was to establish alliances with more powerful alien species and to harvest alien technology which might be used in defense against less friendly aliens, who they now realized were not about to leave Earth alone.
In 2004, an Ancient outpost was uncovered in Antarctica, leading to vital clues regarding the mysterious disappearance of the powerful species from the Milky Way, and the location of their legendary base of operations, Atlantis. The city's location was eventually traced to a planet in a far distant dwarf galaxy, Pegasus, and an international research expedition of scientists, academics and military personnel was assembled to explore it, all in full knowledge that the trip may well be one-way.
They discovered Atlantis remarkably intact but abandoned for thousands of years, and dangerously depleted of power. Though the power levels were sufficient to allow the city to function normally, they had no hope of powering the city's defenses, let alone establishing a wormhole with Earth. (This briefly changed with the welcome discovery of a ZPM power source, and Atlantis enjoyed a period of regular contact with Earth - however, the ZPM was almost entirely depleted in a later episode.)
This dilemma was not helped by the fact that, soon after arriving in Pegasus, the expedition members managed to awaken a massive, galaxy-wide colony of hibernating Wraith - the dominant, technologically-advanced species in Pegasus, which feeds off the life force of humans and regards the numerous human civilizations in the galaxy as crops to be harvested at their whim. Oh, and they're also the reason the Ancients abandoned Atlantis all those thousand years ago. Nice crowd. They're particularly interested in this new, rich feeding ground they've heard so much about - Earth - and they'll stop and nothing to get to it.
The Atlantis expedition's goals are simple ones: to study the Ancient city of Atlantis, to establish friendships with other worlds, and to seek out new technology to arm themselves and Earth against the Wraith.
Atlantis In-Game, or "How Does My Character Figure Into This?":
Your character could have come to Atlantis in a number of ways.
Firstly, they may have been recruited as a member of the expedition. It's an international project which requires experts in a wide range of fields - some of the suggested positions are outlined in another post, although you shouldn't feel restricted to the professions listed. They may have been a member of the initial expedition, or they may have arrived since on the Daedalus (Earth's new intergalactic cruiser, constructed after the expedition set out). The Daedalus is currently the only means of transportation between Atlantis and Earth and makes regular runs between galaxies. The voyage from Earth to Atlantis (and vice versa) takes around eighteen days. A round trip is about five and a half weeks.
Alternately, your character may have stumbled upon Atlantis by accident - perhaps they encountered Atlantis personnel on one of Pegasus' many planets or perhaps they were flying by in their own space ship. Maybe they got mixed up in some nasty intergalactic portal action (hey, it's pretty much all been done in the show by this point). Whatever suits your needs or your canon. If you need a hand figuring it out, feel free to ask.
Layout of the City:
Atlantis is massive, roughly the size of Manhattan, and all but a fraction of it remains unexplored by the human expedition. From above, it appears snowflake-shaped, with six large arms or piers extending from a central cluster of towers. The city is filled with spires and skyscrapers, the highest being the centermost control tower. This tower's uppermost chambers house the Puddle Jumper bay - from which the spacecraft of the same name are launched - and the Gate Room and Operations Centre, which contains the Stargate as well as all central control consoles for operating all of the city's systems and databases.
Other areas of note: conference rooms for meetings and debriefings; the medical bay, equipped with both Ancient and human medical devices; the brig, with cells reinforced by powerful forcefields; a holographic projection room, the mess hall, gym, a swimming pool, living quarters and scientific laboratories.
Most of the key locations in the city can be accessed via transporters, which look and function more or less like high-tech elevators, using teleportation technology.
